Discover Your Journey

About Me

Welcome. I'm Avukile Zoya, a Registered Association for Supportive Counsellors and Holistic Practitioners (ASCHP) Specialist Wellness Counsellor passionate about creating a safe, compassionate, and culturally responsive space where people can explore their stories, heal from difficult experiences, and move towards meaningful change.

My journey into counselling is deeply personal. Several years ago, my older sister experienced a severe mental health crisis. Watching someone I loved navigate confusion, fear, and limited access to quality mental health care profoundly shaped my understanding of how essential compassionate support is.

That experience is what led me to Teachers College, Columbia University, where I completed two master's degrees : one in Mental Health Counselling, one in Psychological Counselling , building on a Bachelor's in Molecular Biology from Colorado College that had first taught me how to sit patiently with complexity.

Since then, that same commitment has taken me across public health, mental health, and community-based work in South Africa, Botswana, Colombia, and the United States ; supporting HIV-positive adolescents, working alongside community health teams, and training clinically in New York  before bringing all of it home to practise here in South Africa.

I believe that every person has a story worth telling. Sometimes life experiences ( trauma, grief, relationships, or loss)  begin to define that story in painful ways. My work is grounded in Narrative Therapy and Psychodynamic Therapy, helping clients understand how their past has shaped them while empowering them to write new, healthier chapters: collaborative, warm, and never judgmental.

I honor diverse perspectives and backgrounds, ensuring that my practice is culturally responsive. Respect for each individual's story is central to our therapeutic relationships.

What Therapy Is (and Isn't)

There are a lot of misconceptions about what actually happens in a therapy room. Here’s a plain, honest look at what to expect, and what not to.

Therapy is:

  • A confidential space to speak openly, without judgment, about whatever is weighing on you.
  • A collaborative process. We work through things together; you are never simply “done to.”
  • A place to build self-understanding of how your history, relationships and patterns shape the way you show up today.
  • Grounded in real approaches, drawing on narrative therapy, psychodynamic understanding and family systems principles, adapted to fit you.
  • For growth, not only crisis. People come to therapy while doing well too, to deepen self-awareness, strengthen relationships, or navigate a life transition.
  • You leave with language, tools and insight you can use outside the room, not just conversation for its own sake.

Therapy is not:

  • Advice-giving. I won’t tell you what to do with your life. I’ll help you get clearer on what you actually want.
  • A quick fix. Real change takes time and honesty, and progress isn’t always a straight line.
  • Only for people who are “broken” or in crisis. Coming to therapy isn’t a sign that something is wrong with you, it’s a sign you’re taking your own wellbeing seriously.
  • One-size-fits-all. What supports one person’s healing won’t look the same for another’s, and the process adapts to you, not the other way round.
  • A replacement for emergency care. If you’re in crisis or at risk, therapy on its own isn’t the right first stop, and appropriate referrals are always part of the process.

If you’re still unsure whether therapy is right for you, that uncertainty is a perfectly good place to start.
